Cold storage, explained simply
Keeping coins in a wallet that is never online.
A hardware wallet or a paper backup kept offline cannot be hacked over the internet. It is the safest place for coins you are holding for a long time.
The trade-off: you are fully responsible - lose the device and the seed phrase, and the coins are gone.
